Firebirds Suffer Lopsided Loss at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team suffered a 90-62 loss to host Adelphi University in East Region non-conference play Sunday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

The Firebirds (2-3) were led offensively by junior transfer guard Natasha Roy's 11 points and four assists – both team-highs. Twice-reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week Daeja Quick added nine points, and junior transfer guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd grabbed a team-high five rebounds while scoring eight points and collecting two assists and two steals.

Adelphi (4-2) earned its 3^rd straight win as 11 different players entered the scoring column, including four starters in double-figures. Simone Hobdy led all scorers with 20 points to go with a game-high five steals and three assists. Natalie Fekula hauled in a game-high eight rebounds and added 11 points, and point guard Jess Camarda handed out a game-high eight assists and scored five points.

UDC jumped out to early leads of 3-0 and 5-3, but after an Emily Miccile three-pointer made it 6-5 Adelphi at 8:21, the Panthers never trailed again. UDC sophomore transfer guard Natalija Dubrovina, who knocked down two three-pointers in the first quarter, forced an 8-8 tie with the 2^nd of those three-pointers at the 6:34 mark, and later, after surrendering six straight points, UDC answered right back with the next six to tie it at 14-all with a layup by Roy at 3:16. From that point on though, it was all Adelphi, as the Panthers closed out the first quarter on a 10-1 run to claim a 24-15 lead at the end of the period.

The Panthers' momentum carried over into the 2^nd quarter where they opened on a 10-0 run in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the period. In a nearly seven-minute run that split both quarters, Adelphi held UDC without a field goal and out-scored the Firebirds, 20-1 to take a 34-15 lead. The Panthers would go on to out-score UDC 22-10 in the 2^nd quarter, and they took a commanding, 46-25 lead at halftime.

Lloyd would score the first points of the 3^rd quarter with a layup 10 seconds in to make it a 19-point deficit, but that was as close as UDC would get the rest of the way. Though the Firebird offense picked up in the 2^nd half with 20 points in the 3^rd quarter and 17 points in the 4^th, Adelphi more than matched them with 44 combined points, including 30 in the 3^rd quarter. The Panthers would go on to win comfortably, 90-62.
