AMHERST, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated, 85-56 by East Coast Conference foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.

 

Junior reserve guard Kaiya Coleman led three Firebirds in double-figures scoring with 13 points and also hauled in a game-high nine rebounds. Four starting freshmen guards tallied nine points or better, including Kaylah Cooper with 11 points, Tyra Coombs with 10 points and seven rebounds, Bailee White with nine points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists, and Bianca White, also with nine points.

 

Daemen (7-11, 4-6 ECC), which had six reserves on its bench to UDC's one, had 10 different players enter the scoring column, including five in double-figures. Guard Leah McDonell led all scorers with 14 points while also adding seven rebounds and a game-high three steals, and Sara Saba was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

 

The Wildcats outshot UDC, 50-percent (33-of-66) to 28-percent (20-of-71) from the field, out-rebounded the Firebirds, 49-35, and had eight more assists (18-10). Also, taking advantage of six substitutes at their disposal, the Wildcats' six reserves outscored UDC's one, 43-13.

 

The Wildcats used an 8-0 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter and a 9-0 run in the closing minutes to take a 22-14 lead at the period's end. Then, in the 2nd quarter, the Firebirds had outscored their hosts 10-7 through the first seven minutes of play and cut the deficit to five, 29-24, but Daemen closed on a 9-1 run and took a 38-25 lead at halftime.

 

Daemen put the game away early in the 3rd quarter as they opened on a 16-3 march over the first five minutes of action and extended its lead to 54-28. The Wildcats would take a 65-39 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

 

UDC never got any closer to Daemen than 22 points in the final period, and the Wildcats closed out the game on a 7-0 run to win by their largest margin of the day, 29 points.
