UDC Women’s Basketball Suffers Loss at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated, 70-33 by host Shippensburg University in non-regional action Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.

Freshman guard Bailee White led the Firebirds with 11 points while senior center Jaslynn Rollins hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds.

Shippensburg (5-1), which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll, featured two double-figure scorers in guard Colleen Young (17 points) and forward Morgan Griffith (12 points). Young shot 8-of-11 from the field for her game-high scoring total, and Griffith recorded a double-double as she grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with her double-digit scoring total.

The Firebirds (1-6) raced out to an early 7-2 lead, helped by back-to-back three-pointers by White, but the Raiders would go on to out-score the Firebirds 24-6 in the final eight minutes of the opening period to take a 26-13 lead at the quarter's end.

Shippensburg would then out-score UDC 11-2 in the first five minutes of the 2nd quarter to open up a 37-15 lead. The Raiders would lead 44-20 at halftime.

UDC would hold Shippensburg to just 10 points in the 3rd quarter on 31-percent field goal shooting, but the Firebirds, meanwhile, shot just 1-of-14 from the field and settled for only six points in the period. The Raiders led, 54-26 heading into the 4th quarter.

Shippensburg opened the 4th quarter on a 12-2 run, extending its lead to the largest margin of the night, 66-28 at the 4:42 mark. The Raiders would then coast to a 37-point margin of victory.

The Raiders out-shot the Firebirds 46-percent (27-of-59) to 18-percent (11-of-63) from the field and 29-percent (4-of-14) to 11-percent (3-of-27) from three-point range. They also out-rebounded UDC 49-39, out-scored their guests 46-10 in the paint, and turned the ball over three fewer times (13-10) while totaling 21 assists to UDC's three.

Next up, UDC will host its East Coast Conference season home opener vs. Daemen on Saturday, December 3rd at 1 p.m.
