UDC Women’s Basketball Defeated by Southern Connecticut State

BRIDGEPORT, CT – Freshmen guards Bianca White and NyAsia Anderson combined to score 31 points, but the Firebirds shot just 26-percent from the field in a 90-55 loss vs. Southern Connecticut State in non-conference East Regional play Saturday at the University of Bridgeport's Hubbell Gym.
White made a team-high five three-pointers while shooting 6-of-17 from the field en-route to a season-high scoring output of 18 points, and Anderson shot 5-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 at the foul line to score 13 points while also hauling in a team best eight rebounds.
The Firebirds fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss – their 3rd loss to a Northeast-10 team this year. The Owls improved to 1-3 with the victory.
Southern Connecticut was led by guard Maria Weselyj's game-high 24 points on 7-of-15 FG shooting and 6-of-12 shooting behind-the-arc. Forward Taylor McLaughlin also pitched in a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Owls out-shot UDC 49-percent (29-of-59) to 26-percent (19-of-73) from the field and 44-percent (14-of-32) to 20-percent (6-of-30) from three-point range. They also held a 55-35 rebounding advantage and doubled-up the Firebirds in bench points, 28-14.
UDC's Anderson scored the first points of the game on a layup a little over 30 seconds into the action, but that would be the Firebirds' first and only lead of the game. Following a four-point play (three-pointer and the foul) by Bianca White to bring the Firebirds within one, 9-8, the Owls closed out the final 5:30 of the first quarter on a 13-2 run, and took a commanding 22-10 lead.
McLaughlin would score the first points of the 2nd quarter, hitting a three-pointer to extend the Owls' lead to 15, 25-10. UDC would shrink that deficit to nine with a 6-0 run, but SCSU held the Firebirds scoreless for the final five minutes of the half while closing on a 10-0 run to take a 35-16 lead into intermission.
Still an 18-point cushion for the Owls at the four-minute mark in the 3rd quarter, SCSU put the game out of reach with an 11-1 run, padding its lead to 29 heading into the 4th quarter. The Owls would then coast in the 4th quarter to a 35-point victory.
