Firebirds Fall at Queens, 75-47

FLUSHING, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team suffered a lopsided, 75-47 loss at Queens College in East Coast Conference play Thursday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

The Firebirds' 2nd straight loss drops them to 15-5 overall and 10-2 in league play, while Queens evens the season series with UDC and improves to 12-7 overall and 9-4 in the ECC.

The Firebirds forced two consecutive ties in the opening four minutes of play, but a 16-4 charge to end the 1st quarter had the Knights off and running with a 20-8 lead at the first horn. Queens also mounted an 18-3 run in the final 6:46 of the 2nd quarter to take a 43-18 halftime lead, and UDC never got any closer than 20 points the rest of the way.

Guards Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore and Brandi Henton led the Firebirds with 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Henton also leading the team with six rebounds and dishing out three assists.

The Knights featured four scorers in double-figures, including a game-high 18 points on six three-point field goals by reserve freshman guard Merrick Rowland. Merrick's sister and reigning ECC Player of the Year, junior guard Madison Rowland, packed the stat sheet with six points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. The eldest Rowland sister, senior forward Mackenzie Rowland, contributed a double-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Also, forward Elisabeth Gully contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

Queens out-shot UDC 53-percent to 29-percent from the field and 47-percent to 38-percent from three-point range, and the Knights had a 47-29 rebounding advantage which resulted in double the 2nd chance points (10-5) and double the points in the paint (36-18).

The Firebirds will look to shake off two straight league losses as they visit Molloy College on Saturday, February 6th at 12 p.m.
