UDC Women's Basketball Earns No. 3 Seed with At-Large NCAA Division II Tournament Bid

NCAA Division II Tournament Bracket

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team has earned a No. 3 seed in the East Regional with its at-large 2015 NCAA Division II Tournament bid announced during the Selection Sunday show on NCAA.com.

The eight-team East Regional Tournament will be hosted by the top-seed Adelphi in Garden City, NY, where the Firebirds will square off against No. 6 Franklin Pierce in the first of four quarterfinal games on Friday, March 13th at noon.

This year's selection marks the program's 7th all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and the 4th under 11th year head coach Lester Butler, Jr.  The East Coast Conference 2014-15 Coach of the Year, Butler has guided the Firebirds to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years.

This season, the Firebirds (25-4) set a new school record with 25 wins - the 2nd most in the entire East Region. Also, their 14-game win-streak to end the regular season was the 2nd longest in the region this year. Seventeen of UDC's 25 wins have come by double-figures, and the Firebirds are 7-1 outside of conference play and 13-1 on the road this season.

UDC features the ECC's Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-ECC honoree in senior forward Denikka Brent (Mechanical Engineering – Chesapeake, VA/Booker T. Washington HS) as well as two all-conference selections at guard in senior Telisha Turner (Second Team All-ECC) and junior Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore (Honorable Mention).

The Firebirds will be seeking their first NCAA Tournament win since 1989 when William Robinson's UDC squad advanced to the Elite 8 with back-to-back Atlantic Region wins over Shaw and Virginia State.
