Telisha Turner, Denikka Brent Earn First Team All-East Coast Conference Honors

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – Standout juniors Telisha Turner and Denikka Brent of the University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team have both earned First Team All-East Coast Conference honors in a vote by the conference's head coaches.

Turner (Criminal Justice – Wilmington, DE/Harcum), a transfer guard playing her first season at UDC, made an immediate impact for the Firebirds. At the end of the regular season, Turner currently ranks No. 3 in the conference in scoring (18.0 ppg), No. 2 in three-point FG pct. (41.8), No. 8 in free-throw pct. (78.0), No. 10 in FG pct. (44.2) and No. 12 in assists (64).

She scored in double-figures in 22 of 25 games this season, including 12 games of 20 points or more and a season-high 31 points vs. American International on January 4th. Twice she made a season-high six three-point field goals and on January 15th vs. Molloy she shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Brent (Mechanical Engineering – Chesapeake, VA/Booker T. Washington HS) also keyed the Firebirds' resurgence from a 10-18 mark in 2012-13 to a 19-7 mark this year. She earned ECC weekly honor roll a total of six times, including a stretch of five straight weekly mentions. At regular season's end, she ranks No. 2 in FG pct. (50.5), No. 8 in scoring (14.6 ppg), No. 10 in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and 12th in steals (39).

She scored in double-figures in 22 of 25 games, including four games of 20 points or more and a season-high 24 points on two separate occasions. She also recorded four double-doubles as she hauled in 10 or more rebounds four times, including her season-high 13 three separate times.

Turner and Brent led the Firebirds to a 19-7 overall record and a 15-5 mark in ECC play this season. For the second time in three years, UDC has earned a No. 2 seed in the ECC Women's Basketball Tournament being held this week. The Firebirds will host on Thursday at 7 p.m. the winner of the No. 3 Queens vs. No. 6 Dowling quarterfinal matchup.
