Updating the Firebirds

District of Columbia must win on Saturday to keep its very slim playoff hopes alive. The Firebirds are currently three games behind Queens in the win column for the 6th and final playoff spot with only four games left to play. They have lost 11 of their last 13 games, including their last three.

Scouting Dowling

The Golden Lions come into Saturday's contest with the highest national ranking in their program's history of No. 17. They have won 13 of their last 14 games, including their last three. Dowling is 18-3 overall and 12-1 in ECC play, with their only league loss of the season coming at LIU Post (59-50) on January 30th. The Golden Lions feature the nation's No. 1 scoring defense (46.7 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (30.9) and are ranked No. 7 in blocked shots per-game (5.7). Dowling is ½ a game behind NYIT for 1st place in the ECC standings.

Last Meeting

The Firebirds put a scare into the reigning ECC champions at Dowling Gymnasium when these two last met on January 16th, but a 31-24 halftime lead dissipated when District of Columbia shot just 24-percent and committed 14 turnovers in the second half, and Dowling escaped with a 51-46 victory. Early on, it looked as though the Golden Lions would run away with the win, racing out to a 24-15 lead with 4:50 remaining in the first half. At that juncture, however, the Firebirds went wild, scoring the final 16 points of the stanza to assume a 31-24 halftime lead. Junior point guard Teara Shaw (11 points) had seven points during the run and sophomore guard Denikka Brent (15 points) added six. Dowling responded, however, by opening the second half much the same way it did the first half – on a 12-2 flurry. Danielle Wilson (14 points, 16 rebounds) collected six of the points and the Golden Lions pushed ahead, 36-33. District of Columbia forced three ties at 36, 38 and 41 but never took a lead, thereby allowing Dowling to grab the reigns for good with a 6-0 run to take a 47-41 lead at the 4:35 mark. Later, a basket by Shaw would make it a one-possession game with 1:05 showing on the clock, but despite having a chance with the ball again after that, the Firebirds were out of gas.

Updating the Firebirds

District of Columbia must win on Saturday to keep its very slim playoff hopes alive. The Firebirds have won two of their last three games, with both wins coming against two of the upper-tier teams in the ECC. Most recently, the Firebirds completed a remarkable comeback from a 10-point deficit with under six minutes to play to beat LIU Post, 83-79 on Wednesday night at UDC Gym. Over the last three games, District of Columbia is shooting 49-percent from the field and 46-percent from three-point range while averaging 11.3 three-point field goals made per-game. The Firebirds also have an impressive 1.6 turnover ratio in that stretch with 17.7 assists per-game and only 11.0 turnovers per-game.

Scouting Dowling

The Golden Lions come into Saturday's contest having won their last two consecutive games against Molloy (73-53) and Roberts Wesleyan (67-61). Sophomore guard Darien Davis, who has only started three games for Dowling all season, comes off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 13.7 ppg. Upperclassmen starting guards Josh Malone and Corwin Austin are the Golden Lions' other primary scoring threat, averaging 12.2 ppg and 10.7 ppg, respectively. Dowling features the 2nd best scoring defense in the league with 64.3 points allowed per-game. The Golden Lions are also 2nd in the league in opponents' FG percentage (39.7) and opponents' three-point percentage (30.6).

Last Meeting

The Golden Lions cruised to an 83-67 victory at Dowling Gymnasium on the strength of a 23-4 surge in the first half when these two ECC foes last met on January 16th. Dowling raced out to a 10-2 lead in the opening minutes only to have the Firebirds pull in front 12-10 after a Michael Terry three-pointer capped a 10-0 District of Columbia run. That would be the Firebirds' only lead of the game though, as a three-pointer by Darien Davis (game-high 17 points) sparked the 23-4 surge which propelled them to a commanding, 33-16 advantage, and the Golden Lions never looked back. Dowling shot 50-percent from the field while holding District of Columbia to 38-percent shooting, including a 24-percent clip in the first half. The Firebirds also shot a season-low 16-percent (3-of-19) from three-point range for the day while Dowling made 7-of-15 (47-percent).

Careful Quasim

Junior transfer point guard Quasim Jones has gone without a turnover in three of the Firebirds' last four games whilst averaging 39.8 minutes per-contest. Meanwhile, he is averaging 6.8 assists and 15.5 points per-game. Jones was at his best on February 6th at home against NYIT when he dished an NCAA season game-high 16 assists while committing zero turnovers and scoring 17 points.

Home Cooking

All four of the Firebirds' wins this season have come on their home floor as they are 4-5 on the season at UDC Gym. Two of those five losses came by two points, as District of Columbia has been very competitive at home this season.

Daytime Struggles

Not only have all the Firebirds' wins this season come at home, but all four of those games were played at night. In games played in the afternoon this season, District of Columbia is 0-11. Weekends have been very unkind to the Firebirds in 2012-13, as they are 1-12 on Saturdays and Sundays, with their only weekend win coming in their season home opener on a Saturday night against USciences on November 10th.
