Updating the Firebirds
The Firebirds opened their 2012-13 season with a pair of tough losses at the ECC/CACC Challenge hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas last weekend. District of Columbia first lost a 77-64 decision against Caldwell in its season opener on Friday night, and then lost a 70-63 battle to Goldey-Beacom the next day. Senior guard Janelle Junior led the Firebirds at the ECC/CACC Challenge, averaging 16.0 points per-game while shooting 55-percent from the field and 56-percent from three-point range. Also, freshman Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore registered 10.0 points per-game over the weekend, including a 12-point effort in her collegiate debut.
Scouting Washington Adventist
The Shock return three senior guards, including shooting guard Vanessa Rice, who averaged 11.8 points per-game last season. They also feature a dynamic three-point shooting threat in Angelica Nevarez and a superb defensive player in Quianna Tiggle (46 steals). WAU is coming off a 6-17 season last year, and lost its season opener at Shippensburg on Sunday by a lopsided score of 85-50. Tiggle led the Shock with 10 points.
Last Meeting
The last time these two schools met was on Feb. 8, 2011, and District of Columbia earned a very one-sided, 97-39 victory at UDC Gym. Julissa Anderson and Ty Abilla were two of six Firebirds to score in double-figures while Vanessa Rice led the Shock with 10 points.
Early Trends
Through two games this season, the Firebirds are committing almost twice as many fouls as their opponents (39-21) and getting out-rebounded by an average of 15.5 boards per-game. Also, they were 18-0 last season when leading at halftime, but squandered a narrow, 37-34 lead over Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. On a positive note, District of Columbia has made 46-percent of its three-point attempts while holding its opponents to 33-percent from behind-the-arc.
