University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Inks Virginia Basketball Standout Tatyana Calhoun

WASHINGTON, DC  –  Tatyana Zaire-Monize Calhoun, a First Team All-State selection out of Sussex Central High School in Virginia, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of the District of Columbia, it was announced by head women's basketball coach Lester Butler, Jr. on June 11, 2012.

"Tatyana is a great athlete and a very good rebounder," Butler said. "She can score with her back to the basket, and face-up and attack the rim. We feel like Tatyana is an excellent addition to our program both as a player and a person."

A forward for the Lady Tigers, Calhoun finished her storied career at Sussex Central with 1,105 points and several accolades, including: District and Region Player of the Year, First Team All-State, All-Region and All-District (senior year), Second Team All-Region and First Team All-District her junior year, Team Most Valuable Player her junior and senior years (2011 and 2012) and she was also selected to play in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game.

Calhoun led Sussex Central to two Virginia State Tournaments, including the Group A State Title game her junior season. Her senior season, the Lady Tigers won the District and Regional Championships and advanced to the first round of the State Group A Tournament.

At 5-foot-9, Calhoun anticipates she will play a mix of shooting guard and small forward for the Firebirds when she joins the team in 2012-13. District of Columbia returns nine of the 16 players from last year's team which finished 21-7 overall (12-4 in the East Coast Conference) and earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
