The University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Suffers Lopsided Loss to Nationally-Ranked Franklin Pierce

LONG ISLAND, NY –  The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team fell to the No. 19 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce Ravens, 82-48 on Thursday evening in the opening game of the Pioneer Classic, hosted by C.W. Post.

The loss drops UDC to 8-2 overall while FPU, a member of the Northeast-10 conference, snaps a three-game losing skid to improve to 7-3. The Firebirds take on another NE-10 school tomorrow in UMass-Lowell while the Ravens play tournament host C.W. Post.

Backcourt mates Lauren Brittingham (Washington, DC – Potomac HS) and Denikka Brent (Chesapeake, VA – Booker T. Washington HS) led the Firebirds with 10 and nine points, respectively as UDC struggled offensively, shooting just 25-percent from the field (18-of-71) and scoring 25 points below its team season average.

FPU was led by Jewell White (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Amanda Saab (15 points, eight rebounds). The Ravens shot 41-percent from the field (26-of-64) including an impressive 11-of-25 (44-percent) from long-range. They also held a 57-44 rebounding advantage and dished out 18 assists to UDC's eight.

District of Columbia's leading scorer Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL – Williamson HS) opened the scoring with a deep three-pointer but would only make one of her next 11 shots from the field to finish with five points for the day. Bonner's three-pointer helped the Firebirds soar to an early 10-2 lead over the first two-and-a-half minutes of play, but six straight points by FPU's Amanda Saab and an and-one layup by Jewel White resulted in a 9-0 Ravens run which catapulted Franklin Pierce in front, 11-10 at the 15:30 mark. The two teams went back-and-forth over the next seven minutes, but the Ravens would score 24 of the final 31 points in the half over the last 8:41 and took a 42-29 lead into the intermission.

Franklin Pierce would put the game out of reach as it outscored UDC 17-2 in the first seven minutes of the second stanza. Ty Abilla (Galloway, NJ – Absegami HS) scored a season-high six points off the bench, all of which came in the second half, but the Firebirds managed just 19 second-half points as they fell by the largest margin of the game, 82-48.
