University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Advances to 3-0 with a 74-61 Victory Over Bloomfield College at the AIC Classic

Springfield, MA – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball charges to a 3-0 start on the year with their second victory at the American International College Classic.  The Firebirds defeated Bloomfield College 74-61 at the hands of another big day from senior guard Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL – Williamson HS).  Bonner continued her shooter's touch, scoring 26 points on the day.   Bonner has 56 points in the last two games for UDC.  The Firebirds advance to 3-0 with the win while Bloomfield College drops to 0-2.

Bonner's 26 points came on 9-17 shooting (6-9 from three point range) and was complimented by 10 rebounds.  The Firebirds also got another extremely productive game from junior guard Janelle Junior (Riverside, CA – La Sierra HS) who scored 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting.  The Firebirds shot 80% from three point range in the second half and 50% overall.

The Firebirds gained control of the game quickly, taking a 15-4 lead five minutes into the game.  But the Deacons did not go away, surging to tie the game 29-29 with five minutes to play in the first half.  UDC then went on a bit of run to take the lead 40-34 going in the locker room for halftime.  The second half was all Firebirds as they went on an 18-4 run to start out the half, and they never looked back cruising to a 74-61 win.

UDC Head Coach Lester "Jay" Butler had this to say about the victory, "Our goal was to win both games this weekend, and we played well enough to be able to do that.  We put a lot of emphasis on rebounding for this game, and I think that paid off.  Jasmine [Rich] and Lauren [Brittingham] both did a great job running our offense today.  We are going to need a full team effort on Tuesday against Holy Family."

The Firebirds have a quick turnaround as they face #17 ranked Holy Family away on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
