University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Downs Goldey Beacom College 86-74 at the AIC Classic
Springfield, MA – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball Team earned their second win of the season at the American International College Classic against Goldey Beacom College 86-74. Goldey Beacom had four scorers in double figures, but UDC had Jamilia Bonner who burned the nets with 30 points. With the victory the Firebirds advance to 2-0 while the Lightning falls to 1-2.
The game started out tight and was tied 5-5 after only a few minutes of play. The Firebirds took control from there, opening up an 11 point lead 20-9 at the 13:45 mark in the half. The lightning did not go away however, as they went on a run of their own and led at the half 43-36.
The second half, however, belonged to UDC and senior guard Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL – Williamson HS). Bonner tallied 30 total points on 11-19 from the field, 6-13 from three point range, and 2-2 from the foul line. The Firebirds shot 50% from the field in the second half and 41% from three point range. The Firebirds also got significant contributions from senior guard Lauren Brittingham (Washington, DC – Oxon Hill/Potomac High School) with 12 points and junior guard Janelle Junior (Riverside, CA – La Sierra HS) with 11 points.
UDC Head Coach Lester "Jay" Butler had this to say about the victory, "It was a good win for us against a very solid east region team. We came out a bit flat initially and ran into some foul trouble, but we played great defense and rebounded very well in the second half. Jamilia [Bonner] shot the ball very well tonight, but our defense was the key for sure."
The Firebirds will look to advance to 3-0 as they return to action tomorrow at the AIC Classic at 3:30 against Bloomfield College.
