Jamilia Bonner scored a season-high 24 points at Salem

Firebird Women Down Fayetteville State Broncos, 77-54

Washington, DC: January 3, 2010-- Junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Accounting-Mobile, Al) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team to a 77-54 win over the Fayetteville State University Broncos tonight at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC.

The Firebirds led the entire way,  going into the break with a 43-34 advantage. They shot 38 percent ( 29-77) from the field for the game, 50 percent ( 10-20) from beyond the arc and 69 percent ( 9-13) from the charity stripe. The Broncos shot 34 percent ( 21-62) from the field, only 9 percent ( 2-23) from beyond the arc and 77 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mass Media- Mt. Laurel, NJ) joined Bonner in double figures, scoring 15 points, grabbing 2 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists and making 3 steals. Freshman guard/forward Julissa Anderson (Early Childhood Education- Greensboro, NC) followed with 9 points, 2, rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.  Junior guard Jasmine Rich ( Business Management- Willingboro, MD) added 8 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out a game-high 11 assists and made 1 steal. Senior guard Lillian McGill grabbed 7 rebounds and scored 7 points.

The Firebirds opened the game with a 17-9 run and did not look back, capitalizing on 29 Bronco turnovers to score 33 points, outscoring their bench 34-27 and holding a 12-4 advantage in fast break points.

Tiffany Haywood led the Bronco scoring with 18 points, followed by JeLena Robertson with 9 points. Tierra Coleman and Amanda Sinclair added 6 points apiece.

UDC moves on to host their New Year's Classic January 8th and 9th at the Sports Complex. They will play King College on Saturday the 8th and Central State University on Sunday the 9th.
