UDC Women’s Basketball Signs Five Prospects for the 2010-11 Season

Washington, DC- May 5, 2010--University of the District of Columbia women's basketball looks for continued success as the Firebirds have signed five highly touted newcomers for next season. The incoming class includes three freshman and two junior college transfers. The class hails from New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

“We are extremely excited about our incoming class for next season,” Head Women's Basketball Coach Lester Butler, Jr., said. “We really focused on the missing pieces in our puzzle and went out and recruited the best student-athletes to fill the voids. We are going to be a strong inside team, along with being good at attacking the rim with the ability to finish.”

Julissa Anderson – 6'1 Guard/Forward – Greensboro, NC – Southeast Guilford

Four-year letter winner in basketball …. All Guilford County Selection … named Most Valuable Player at Southeast Guilford … averaged 12.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 2 steals per game … led team to State Playoff appearance … played AAU for Greensboro Galaxy

Coach Butler on Julissa:

“Because of her size and athleticism, we envision Julissa playing more of a big guard/small forward. Long, athletic and the ability to score inside and out will make Julissa a big matchup problem for our opponents. She was our only early signee, so there is no question that we really believe in her abilities and have high expectations of her.”

Dohnay Banice – 6'1 Forward – Wilmington, DE – Delaware Tech. Comm. College

Named 1st team XIX All-Region as a freshman and sophomore … National Junior College Women Basketball Player of the Week for January 25 … averaged 17.3 points and 14.9 rebounds per game while shooting 65% from the field … lead the nation in offensive rebounding … second overall in total rebounds … second in the nation in FG percentage

Coach Butler on Dohnay:

“Dohnay is a relentless worker down low.  With her ability to rebound the ball and being active in the paint I expect great things from her this season. I expect her to be able to defend top post players that we will face and we have the confidence she will get the job done. We are thrilled to add another strong, athletic player to our team”

Kendra Johnson – 5'6 Guard – Lenape, NJ – Union County Comm. College

Named 1st team All Garden State as a freshman and sophomore … 1st team XIX All-Region as a freshman … 2nd team XIX All-Region as a sophomore … averaged 17.9 points, 4.3 assist, 4.3 steals and 4 rebounds per game.

Coach Butler on Kendra:

“Kendra is very good player who can excel at point guard or shooting guard. Her ability to create for others and also her ability to create for herself makes her a difficult matchup for other teams. Her experience coming out of junior college will offer us much needed maturity and decision making.”

Monet Nias – 6'2 Forward/Center – Glen Burnie, MD – Old Mill

Four-year letter winner in basketball … All Arundel County selection … averaged 14.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game … led team to State Playoff appearance … played AAU for Maryland Sting

Coach Butler on Monet:

“Monet is another tough post player we added to this year recruiting class.  With her size and ability I expect a very good freshman year and great four year career from Monet. With her ability to block and alter shots it figures prominently in what were trying to do defensively.”

Renita Walker – 5'7 Guard – Norfolk, VA – Booker T. Washington

Four-year letter winner in basketball … named 1st Team All-Eastern District as a senior … Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year … averaged 13.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 3.7 assist per game …  led team to State Playoff appearance … played AAU for Boo Williams Summer League

Coach Butler on Renita:

Renita is a strong, quick, athletic and tough minded guard who has the ability to play both guard positions. She is a prolific shooter with a great amount of ability to score the ball. We are impressed with her work ethic and desire to continue to get better daily.  She embodies the definition of a gym rat and we love her commitment to the game.”

Butler anticipates signing one or two more players in the late signing period to round out this recruiting class.
