Washington, D.C. - The University of the District of Columbia is proud to announce that Lester L. Butler, Jr.,head coach of the women's basketball team, has been named 2009 National Coach of the Year for Division II (Women). Butler was chosen through a nationwide fan poll conducted by the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HRSN). Results were released this week.

St. Augustine, FL: March 6, 2009—The 20th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team concluded their 2009 appearance in the Independent Women’s Basketball Tournament with a, 71-61, defeat of the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, tonight, in St. Augustine, Florida at the Flagler College Gymnasium. It was the second consecutive win for the Firebirds in the Tournament, after defeating Flagler College on Thursday night.

St. Augustine, Fl: March 5, 2009—Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) recorded her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in leading the 20th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 73-58, win over the Flagler College Saints in the first round of the National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament in St. Augustine, Florida tonight. UDC, ranked 8th in the NCAA Atlantic Region, will play the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon in the next round on, Friday, March 6.

The UDC Women’s Basketball Team will travel to St. Augustine, Florida this weekend to participate in the 2009 Women’s National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament. The Tournament , scheduled for March 5-8, 2009, will feature non-conference schools competing for the Independent Schools Championship. UDC won the 2008 Championship and is looking to repeat this year. Raleigh, NC : February 19, 2009—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) scored a season-high 23 points to lead the number 23 ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 74-71, win over the Shaw University Bears tonight at the Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina. Brandon also collected four rebounds and dished out two assists in the winning effort.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored four members of its Firebird Women’s Basketball Team who are seniors and played in their final home basketball game last Saturday, during Senior Day ceremonies. LaQuanda Brandon, Jessica Edwards, DeVaughn Hailey, and Deyshia Williams played in their final home game, helping to defeat the University of the Sciences-Philadelphia, 61-51. UDC Athletics Director Patricia Thomas and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lester L. Butler, Jr., presented each senior their framed uniform and teammates gave them other gifts. “We thank these young ladies for their outstanding contribution to the Women’s Basketball Team, in particular, and the advancement of the UDC Intercollegiate Athletics Program in general”, said Athletics Director Thomas.

Takoma Park, MD: February 16, 2009—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) led the 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 40-65, trouncing of the Columbia Union College Pioneers tonight in Takoma Park, Maryland, at the Pit. Brandon scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in pacing the team to the win.
