Lillian McGill Named ICAA Freshman of the Year

Washington, DC—University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds forward Lillian McGill, has been named the 2008 Independents Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year. McGill, from Sumter, South Carolina, averaged 13.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.48 steals per game while shooting 50% from the floor.

UDC Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lester L. Butler says, “I am extremely proud of Lillian’s accomplishments. It is a well deserved honor that she definitely earned. She is one of the hardest workers on the team and it shows by her productivity on the court. This award validates her hard work and positive attitude.”

McGill was also named to the ICAA First Team, the only freshman accorded this distinction this year.  She led the Lady Firebirds to a 21-8 record and to the 2008 Independent Schools National Basketball Championship in February of this year.

She is a graduate of Sumter High School, where she established herself as a basketball force, being named Most Valuable Player, All-State Player, South Carolina Player of the Year, and was one of the top five players in the state of South Carolina. McGill also played in the North Carolina and South Carolina  All Star Game.
