UDC Lady Firebirds Fall 60-59 to Edinboro Lady Fighting Scotts

Edinboro, PA: February 21, 2008—It was an exciting finish to a hard fought contest as the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds fell to the Edinboro University Lady Fighting Scotts, 60-59, tonight in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led UDC in scoring with 15 points and 16 rebounds, her 17th double-double of the season.

UDC led most of the first half but Edinboro came back to tie the score at 30 with 44 seconds remaining in the half. Then Samantha Reimer drained a 3-pointer with 4 seconds remaining to give Edinboro a 33-30 lead at the break.

The score was knotted four times by Edinboro in the second half after UDC gained the lead, but then went on to fall when McGill missed a lay-up in the last second of the game. The UDC bench outscored Edinboro’s 22-2, but it was not enough to give them the win.

Edinboro shot 41% (20 for 49) in two-point field goals for the game compared to UDC’s 36% (21 for 59). The difference came at the charity stripe as Edinboro made 94% (15 for 16) of their free throws compared to UDC converting only 16 of 24.

Junior center Deshyia Williams (Camden, NJ) was the only other UDC player to reach double figures, scoring 14 points. Reimer paced Edinboro to the win with a game high 24 points, followed by Janine McDonald with 12.

With this loss, UDC fell to 18-8 for the season, while Edinboro improved to 15-9, as they swept the Lady Firebirds during the season.

UDC returns home to host the National Women’s Independent Schools Basketball Tournament February 23-26. Eight NCAA Division II Independent Schools will participate in the Tournament, which will be held in the UDC Physical Activities Center.
