UDC Lady Firebirds Out Gun Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers 91-87

Takoma Park, MD: February 16, 2008—Freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) tallied her 15th double-double (20 points and 13 rebounds) of the season to lead the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds past the Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers 87-91 tonight at the “Pit”. The win improves UDC’s record to 17-7 for the season.

The Lady Firebirds took a 13- point (49-36) lead into the break after accumulating several double-digit leads during the first half, including opening a-15-point lead during the period. UDC jumped out to a 3-13 lead before CUC made an 8-0 run at the 15:40 mark to come to within two points (11-13). CUC knotted the score at 14 at the 12:40 mark, then built a 17-16 lead before junior guard Devaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) made a lay-up to regain the lead for UDC at the 11:27 mark before going into the break with the 13-point lead.

The second half saw UDC extend the lead to as many as 21 points with a 10-0 run before CUC made a 7-0 run to close to within 12 points. Senior guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) responded with a 3-pointer to take the lead back up to 15 with 13:56 remaining in the game.

Taking advantage of some late UDC fouls, CUC closed the gap to end the game at 87-91.
UDC shot 39% (24 for 61) in two point field goals, 46% (10 for 22) in 3-point field goals and made 73% (33 for 45) of their free throws for the game.

In addition to McGill, three other Lady Firebirds reached double figures, including sophomore guard Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD), who scored a career high 18 points, Hailey 16 and senior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) also with 16 points.

Four Lady Pioneers scored in double figures led by Jada Richardson with the game high of  27 points, Melanie Gordon with 19, and Kayla Harrison and Willona with 10 apiece. CUC dropped to 3-22 for the season with this loss.

UDC returns to the hard court Monday, February 18, in their final home game of the season on “Senior Night”, against the Apprentice School Lady Builders.
