UDC Lady Firebirds Down CUC Lady Pioneers 68-55

Washington, DC: February 5, 2008—The Lady Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia had two celebrations tonight. First, they celebrated the observance of “National Girls and Women in Sports Day” during half-time festivities, then their 68-55 victory over the Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers.

Acting UDC President Stanley Jackson recognized the contribution of female student-athletes to the University’s athletic program by presenting certificates of excellence to UDC women athletes who are finishing their final year of competition, and roses to each female student-athlete at the University.  It was a part of the University’s on-going commitment to gender equity and recognition of the contribution women athletes have made to the development of its athletic programs.

Sophomore guard Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD) led UDC to the win with 16 points, followed by freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) with 13 points and 13 rebounds, her 11th double-double of the season. Senior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) added 8 points.

The Lady Firebirds led at the break 35-20, on the strength of 44% (15 for 34) field goal shooting. The UDC bench out scored CUC’s 24-13, and made the difference in the game.
UDC also took advantage of CUC’s turnovers by converting them to 30 points.

Jada Richardson led the Lady Pioneer scoring with 17 points, followed by Erin Duffle with 10. They shot 35% (19 for 54) for the game, while UDC shot 41% (26 for 68).

UDC improved their record to 14-6, while CUC dropped to 3-18. UDC returns to action on February 9, against Chowan University, at home, as they observe “Breast Cancer Awareness Day”
