Lady Firebirds Fall to Lady Rebels 56-77

FORT MYERS, FL : FEBRUARY 22, 2007---- The Dixie State College Lady Rebels defeated the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds, 77-56, in the first round of the Independent Schools Tournament, today, in Fort Myers, Florida. Jessica Carver and Liz Lewis scored 14 points each to lead the Lady Rebels to victory.

The Lady Firebirds took an early lead when senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) opened the scoring with a two-point jumper.  They built the lead to 13, when the Lady Rebels tied the score on a jumper by Tiara Bowman.

The score was tied once more during the first half, but Dixie State took a 34-33 lead into the break on 12-31 (39%) two-point range field goal shooting, 4-8 (50%) three-point shooting, and 5-6 (83%) shooting from the line. UDC shot 13-21 (39%) from two-point range, 5-15 (33%) from three-point range, and 5-6 (83%) from the charity line.

The Lady Rebels had a 7-0 run at the 17:26 mark of the second half to take a 47-39 lead, and continued to build on it. The Lady Firebirds found themselves trying to play catch-up, but could not overtake the determined Lady Rebels.

Dixie State shot 27-65 (42%) from two-point range, 510-28 (36%) from two-point range and 13-18 (72%) from the charity line for the game. UDC shot 21-50 (42%) from two-point range, 6-15 (40%) from three-point range, and 8-12 (67%) from the charity line.

Junior center Sylvia Kemp (Norfolk, VA) led the Lady Firebirds in scoring with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block, followed by sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, and Jenifer Jones with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks.

UDC will play in a consolation game tomorrow against Palm Beach Atlantic College at 12 noon. UDC’s season record now stands at 12-15.
