UDC Lady Firebirds Defeat Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers 62-56

Philippi, WV: December 30, 2006— Freshman Nicole Cooper ( Fort Washington, MD) scored 22 points and made 3 steals to lead the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds to a 62-56 defeat of the Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers this afternoon in Philippi, West Virginia. Tiffany Church, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia added 11 points, and 6 rebounds to the leadership effort for the win. Junior Sylvia Kemp (Norfolk, VA) contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds to the win. UDC’s record is now 5-7.

Alderson-Broaddus went on an 11 point run at 4:54 of the first half to raise the score to 30-18 until UDC finally answered with a two pointer by Sylvia Kemp, 26 seconds before the end of the half.  The Lady Battlers led, 30-21, at the half time break.

UDC’s Sylvia Kemp opened the second half with a jumper, and Alderson’s Alese Davis responded in kind. UDC finally got some traction with a 7 point run at 13:29 into the half to bring the score to within 2 points, to 40-38.

UDC tied the score, 44-44, on a 3 pointer by Tiffany Church at the 8:43 mark, and then took the lead, 47-44, at the 8:01 mark on a three pointer by Nicole Cooper.

The team’s field goal shooting percentages were close with UDC shooting 31 and Alderson-Broaddus actually leading with 38 percent. UDC was able to win the game at the charity line on 11-14 shooting, while Alderson-Broaddus made good on 3-4 of their opportunities at the line.  UDC also had an advantage in turnover points with 23 to Alderson-Broaddus’ 10.

Kim Ankamura led Alderson-Broaddus in scoring with 19, followed by Caitlyn Brown with 13 points.

UDC returns to action on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at home, at 6 p.m., in a re-match with Barton College, who defeated them 64-50, on December 9, in Wilson, NC.
