Lady Firebirds Fall to Lady Panthers 39-44

Washington, DC: January 18, 2007—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds were hoping for a different outcome tonight as they tangled with the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University for the second time in a week, but their efforts   fell short as they lost by the score of 39-44.

Katchona Johnson led the Lady Panthers with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. No other Lady Panther scored in double figures.

Union led 20-15 at the break, on 21 (7-33) percent field goal shooting and 100 percent (6-6) free throw shooting. The score was tied once in the half at 10 points, on a free throw by UDC’s sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) at the 8:12 mark.

The Lady Panthers led throughout the second half, with the Lady Firebirds coming to within one point at the 10:45 mark, which was as close as they got for the remainder of the game.

The low scoring game ended with the Lady Panthers having made 23 percent of their two point field goals to the Lady Firebird’s 26 percent. The charity line made the difference for Union as they made 81 percent (17-21) of their free throws as UDC got in foul trouble and only made 6-10 free throws on 60 percent shooting.

Senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) led the scoring for the Lady Firebirds with 14 points.

The 8-10 Lady Firebirds will return to action Monday, January 23, against the Mount Olive Lady Trojans in Mount Olive, NC.
