Lady Firebirds Defeat Lady Sailfish 63-52

FORT MYERS, FLA: FEBRUARY 23, 2007--- Seeking to bring home a victory from the Independent Schools Tournament after losing in the first round on yesterday, the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds did just that today by defeating the Palm Beach Lady Sailfish, 63-52, in Fort Myers, Florida. Sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) paced the Lady Firebirds in the win with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 6 steals.

UDC took an early lead but relinquished it at the 12:54 mark when Palm Beaches’ Ashley Adkins made a lay-up to tie the score at 14. They went on to take a 35- 28 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Lady Firebirds came back in the second half to make a 14-0 run at the 13:32 mark to take a 49-47 lead on a lay-up by senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ). They then went on a 7-0 run with 3:59 remaining in the game to clinch the win.

UDC shot 21-62 (34%) from two-point range, 4-14 (29%) from three-point range, and 17-25 (68%) from the charity line for the game.

Joining Robin Williams in leading the Lady Firebirds to the win were Jennifer Jones with 16 points, and 5 rebounds, and junior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Ashley Adkins led the Lady Sailfish in scoring a game high 22 points.

The Lady Firebirds return to action on February 28, against the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to close out the 2006-07 season. With today’s win they are 13-15 for the season.
