Lady Firebirds Drop Lady Pioneers 74-63

Takoma Park, MD: February 8, 2007—Sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) paced the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds to a 74-63 win over the Lady Pioneers of Columbia Union College, tonight, in Takoma Park, Maryland. Williams scored 17 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 3 assists for the victory.

Columbia Union started out with a quick lead that UDC tied, at 10, at the 13:37 mark on a 3 pointer by guard Tiffany Church (Norfolk, VA), with an assist from Jessica Edwards (guard-Chicago, IL). The score stayed close and was tied three times in the first half. The half ended with UDC leading 31-26, when Williams made a lay-up with 38 seconds remaining on the clock, and Columbia Union was unable to score when Jada Robinson missed a lay-up as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Firebirds finished the first half shooting 41 percent (13-32) in two-point field goals, 38 percent (3-8) from three point range and 50 percent (2-4) from the charity line.

Senior forward Jennifer Jones opened second half scoring with a jumper for two points at the 19:38 mark, and then Robin Williams gave UDC a 10 point lead at the 17:34 mark with a 3 pointer. Ashley Alexander extended the lead to 12 points with a lay-up at 16:11. The lead then fluctuated until UDC’s Nicole Cooper (freshman- Ft. Washington, MD) made two free throws to end the game at 74-63.

UDC shot 45 percent (30-67) in two-point field goals, 38 percent in three- point field goals and 47 percent in free throws (8-17) for the game. Four Lady Firebirds scored in double figures including, Williams, Cooper -16, Alexander -14, and Sylvia Kemp (junior- Norfolk, VA) 12.

Columbia Union’s Jada Richardson led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Jeaneen White 14, and Lisa Brewer with 10 points.

The 10-14 Lady Firebirds will be back in action on Saturday, February 10, against the Davis & Elkins Lady Senators in Elkins, West Virginia. They defeated the Lady Senators, 64-60, in their first meeting on December 6, in Washington.
