Lady Firebirds Lose to Cheyney Wolves 56-70

Cheyney, PA: January 31, 2007—Ashley Blake led the Cheyney University Lady Wolves to a 70-56 victory over the Lady Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia, tonight, in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. It was the second meeting of the teams this season as the Lady Wolves avenged their early season, 62-65, loss to the Lady Firebirds.

Blake scored 22 points in the win, while Angel Stephens added a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Danielle Jones contributed 13 points and 4 rebounds as a part of the double figure threesome.

UDC actually out scored Cheyney in the first half, hitting 42 percent (11-26) of their two point field goals, 50 percent (3-6) of their 3- point shots and 67 percent (6-9) of their free throws. Lincoln only made 17 percent (7-42) of their two point field goals, and 8 percent (1-12) of their three point shots; but they shot 92 percent (11-12) from the charity line to keep the score close, at 31-26 with UDC leading.

The Lady Firebirds' shooting percentage fell in the second half to 25 percent (10-39) in two point field goals and 41 percent (5-12) in three point shots. They missed all 6 of their free throw attempts. The Lady Wolves improved in all categories and took advantage of 26 Lady Firebird turnovers and personal foul troubles (22) to win the game.

Junior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) was the only UDC player to score in double figures putting up 18 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 1 assist and making 4 steals to lead the team in scoring for the fifth time this season. Clarissa Newton a senior forward from Albany, New York followed with 8 points, and 11 rebounds.

With this loss, the Lady Firebirds fell to 9-13 for the season. They return to action on February 5, against the Shepherd University Lady Rams in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
