Lady Firebirds Pounce on Lady Huskies for 74-53 Win

Washington, DC: January 26, 2007-- The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds jumped out to an early lead in their game against the Lady Huskies of Bloomsburg University tonight, and never looked back as they avenged an early season loss by defeating them 74-53, at home.

Sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) paced the Lady Firebirds to the victory with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist. Ashley Alexander, a junior guard from Washington followed with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, while senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) added 13 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.

UDC started with an early 8-0 run at the 18:59 mark on a 3 pointer by Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD), and Clarissa Newton (Albany, NY) ignited a 6-0 run on a lay-up at the 7:11 mark of the first half.

The Lady Firebirds led 34-20 at the break on 39 percent (14-36) two point shooting and 83 percent (5-6) free throw shooting.

The second half saw the two teams exchange shots, but the Lady Huskies could not catch-up to the offensive minded Lady Firebirds who were intent on making this their seventh home win of the season. UDC’s bench made the difference as they scored 27 points to Bloomsburg’s 8. UDC was able to go down low and score 42 points in the paint to Bloomsburg’s 16.

Coleen Kegerreis was the only Lady Husky to reach double figures, as she had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The 9-11 Lady Firebirds will see their next action on January 29, at 5 p.m., against the Lady Mountain Cats of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, at home.
