Mt. Olive Drops UDC 72-62

Mount Olive, N.C. : January 23, 2007– Freshman forward Helen Moore scored 24 points to lead the Mount Olive College Lady Trojans past the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds 72-62 tonight in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Junior guard Keona Corley contributed heavily to the effort by dishing out 15 assists, while scoring 10 points.

UDC got off to a rough start as Mount Olive jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the game, but closed to within four points before Mount Olive extended their lead to 28-13 at the break, after an 18-7 run.

Senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) opened the second half for the Lady Firebirds by scoring 4 straight points for a 6-0 run to close the lead to 10 points. However, Mount Olive would not be contained as they extended their lead to 55-33.

Freshman guard Tiffany Church (Norfolk, VA) scored a 3-pointer and Junior center Sylvia Kemp made a put back following a miss by Jennifer Jones to bring the score to 69-58.

UDC’s sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) then scored getting an offensive rebound to bring the score to 69-60 with 53 seconds remaining in the game, after a 9-0 UDC run. Unfortunately, time ran out on the Lady Firebirds who suffered their second loss in a row. UDC is now 8-10 for the season.

Robin Williams led the Lady Firebirds in scoring with 20 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Jennifer Jones with 13 points, and Nicole Cooper and Sylvia Kemp with 10 points each.

UDC will see their next action Friday, January 26, at 7 p.m., at home, in the second game of a double-header against Bloomsburg University.
