UDC Out Muscles Barton College for 69-63 Win

Washington, DC: January 3, 2007—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds Basketball Team out muscled and out scored the Barton College Lady Bulldogs to win at home tonight, 69-63, and avenge an early season lost to them. UDC controlled the boards, out rebounding Barton 54-39. It was the best defensive effort of the Lady Firebirds this season.

UDC led 34-25 at the break, hitting 46 percent of their 2-point field goals and 68 percent of their free throws. UDC made 15-24 (63%) of their second half free throws. UDC shot 38 percent for the game to Barton’s 33 percent, and scored 26 points in the paint to Barton’s 18, with 19 points coming from turnovers while Barton managed to score 17 turnover points.

Junior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) paced the Lady Firebirds with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) produced a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Freshman Tiffany Church (Norfolk, VA) added 10 points, and 4 rebounds.

Adrienne Walker led Barton in scoring with 16 points, followed by Esty Flores with 14 points. Jo Denevan added 12 points to the losing effort.

UDC, now 6-7 for the season, returns to action on January 6, at 2 p.m., against St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York.
