UDC LADY FIREBIRDS DEFEAT MANSFIELD LADY MOUNTAINEERS

Washington, DC: After a sluggish start, the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds found some new energy and went on to defeat the Mansfield University Lady Mountaineers 71-53, tonight at home. The Mountaineers took an early lead and maintained it until the 13:01 mark, when UDC’s Jennifer Jones hit a jump shot to tie the score at 11.  From that point on UDC led until Mansfield tied it 22-22 at the 5:44 mark.

UDC had a run of 13 straight points from the 4:57 mark until the end of the first half.  UDC led at the break 35-22. UDC’s bench made the difference in the game as they out scored Mansfield’s bench 21 to 5. Mansfield also suffered from 32 turnovers that UDC converted to 41 points.

UDC had another run from 13:55 of the second half, scoring nine straight points until Mansfield scored at the 10:48 mark, making it 59-32. Deidra Bumbrey paced the Lady Firebirds with 20 points, while Jaime Brown and Jennifer Jones contributed 12 each. Narissa Eve added 10 points. UDC shot 78 % for the game to Mansfield’s 53 %.

Alison Tagliaferri led Mansfield in scoring with 17 points, and Alicia Espigh added 13. Becky Ayers added 12 points.

UDC will see their next action on Sunday, January 15, at 2 p.m., when they play cross-town rival Columbia Union College at home.
