UDC LADY FIREBIRDS COULD NOT PULL TRIGGER ON ANDERSON COLLEGE LADY TROJANS

Anderson, SC: An out of state trip to Anderson, South Carolina to take on the Anderson College Lady Trojans did not help the UDC Lady Firebirds establish a winning streak tonight, as they fell to the Lady Trojans 79-85. After their win over St. Paul’s College last Saturday, the Lady Firebirds were hoping to establish a streak tonight that could be maintained through the remainder of their season.

Anderson made 32 of 38 free throws and outscored UDC 10-4 in overtime to take the win and drop UDC’s season record to 5-12. It was UDC’s second lost to Anderson this season, after dropping one to them 71-88 in December.

Anderson led 43-35 at the half. UDC went on a 22-12 run to tie the game at 62 with 54:34 remaining in the game. LaShonda Chiles scored a basket with 5:16 left in the game to enable Anderson to retake the lead, which they kept until UDC’s Sylvia Kemp scored a second consecutive basket to give the Lady Firebirds the lead again, 72-71.

Two free throws by Mikala Fogle-Wilson and two free throws by Chiles gave Anderson a 75-72 lead with 2:34 remaining, but Deidra Bumbrey connected on a 25-foot jumper to tie the game with one second remaining and send the game into overtime. The Lady Trojans got a basket from Chiles and two free throws by Deidra Langston to clinch it for them.

Latrice Thomas paced the Lady Trojans with a career high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Chiles scored 19 points, Langston added 14 points, and Keana Boyd contributed 13. Deidra Bumbrey led the Lady Firebirds with 20 points, Jaime Brown followed with 17, and Kemp added 14.

The Lady Firebirds return home to take on the Mansfield University Lady Mountaineers, Wednesday, January 11, at 5:30 p.m.
