UDC LADY FIREBIRDS DEFEAT ST. PAULS TO WIN FIFTH GAME OF 2005-06 SEASON

Washington, DC: The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds raised their level of play this afternoon at home to defeat the Saint Paul’s College Lady Tigers 71-61. UDC came out determined to prevent Saint Paul’s from replicating their early season win over them. The Lady Firebirds raced to an early lead of 4-0 at the 19:02 mark of the first half and continued to stretch it to 19-7 at 11:19 of the half, on a lay-up by Robin Williams.

UDC stretched their lead to 37-19 on a three-pointer by Deidra Bumbrey at 1:52 of the half, and did not look back, going into the half-time break with 40-23 lead. St. Paul’s closed it to a 6 point lead (47-41) at the 10:57 mark of the second half, but could not come closer as UDC pulled away, building a 15 point lead with six minutes remaining in the game.

Jaime Brown led the Lady Firebirds with a career high 24 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Jennifer Jones followed with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Sylvia Kemp added 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Nikki Bowen led the Lady Tigers putting up 20 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and making 2 steals. Keycha Johnson added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals in the loss.

The win improves UDC’s season record to 5-11, as they prepare to travel to Anderson, South Carolina on January 9, to play Anderson College.
