Firebirds Soar Past Redhawks, 7-2 in ECC Home Match Indoors

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team defeated East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan College, 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the indoor Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.

The Firebirds, currently ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II East Region, have now won six of their last seven matches as they improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the ECC. The Redhawks lost their 6th straight to fall to 11-10 overall and 0-2 in league play.

UDC won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to complete the victory – its third straight win over RWC in as many years.

The hosts raced out to a 2-0 match lead as they won the top two doubles flights, both in hotly-contested matches. First, juniors Alexis Baguelin and Ander Murillo teamed up for a No. 2 doubles win, 8-6 vs. Gui Plentz de Liz and Dustin Eshleman, and then juniors Rok Bozic and Diego Pinto outlasted Hugo Ball-Greene and Dennis Barlotta, 9-8 at No. 1 doubles for the UDC top pair's sixth consecutive win.

The Firebirds' No. 3 duo, junior Marco Feligioni and freshman Josip Marinic forced five tiebreakers before ultimately being dealt a 9-8(5) loss to Jose Carillo and Paul Langbroek. UDC still took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Marinic was the first to complete a singles win, as his No. 6 flight victory, 6-2, 6-2 over Eshleman, extended UDC's lead to 3-1. The next completed singles match saw Langbroek best Pinto, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, for what proved to be the Redhawks' lone singles win of the day.

UDC went on to win the No. 3, 4, 5 and 1 singles matches in succession to complete the victory. Baguelin beat Barlotta, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3, Murillo defeated Plentz de Liz, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, Feligioni bested Carillo, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, and Bozic capped off the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 vs. Ball-Greene.

Up next is a challenging week for head coach Dickie Mahaffey's No. 6 regionally-ranked Firebirds as they host the No. 2 and 3 ranked teams in the region, back-to-back. First, UDC takes on No. 2 Chestnut Hill on Monday, April 10th at 1 p.m., and then it hosts ECC foe and No. 3 ranked New York Institute of Technology on Friday, April 14th.
