Firebirds Soar Past Philadelphia University, 8-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team earned a decisive, 8-1 victory over regional foe Philadelphia University on Friday afternoon.

The Firebirds (2-5) won three hotly contested doubles matches, and five of the six singles matches, two of which went to extended play. The Rams (3-6), who compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), picked up just one victory at No. 4 singles by Jacobo Atri.

In doubles play, UDC's No. 2 pair of Rok Bozic and Marco Feligioni outlasted Atri and Vincent Breer, 8-6 for the first point of the match. Diego Pinto and Alexis Baguelin followed with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, and Ander Murillo and Noppawat Satprertpry teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.

Murillo earned the first completed singles victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Breer, but the next result in saw Atri knock off Baguelin, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Bozic earned the match-clinching win at No.1 singles, grinding out a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory over Celso de Vera Rehberger.

Including Bozic's win, the Firebirds closed out the match by winning the final four singles bouts as UDC improved to 2-0 in Division II East Region play. Murillo and Feligioni each improved to a team-best 4-3 in singles play, and late team addition, sophomore Noppawat Satprertpry, earned his first collegiate win.

UDC, ranked No. 6 in the ITA East Region poll, is back in action tomorrow afternoon when it takes on another East Region opponent from the CACC in Chestnut Hill College. The Griffins are currently ranked No. 3.
