UDC Men’s Tennis Selected 3rd in ECC Preseason Poll
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team was selected 3rd in the East Coast Conference Preseason Poll as voted on by the league's head coaches.
The Firebirds earned 26 points in the poll voting to finish behind No. 2 Queens with 28 and the unanimous favorite, NYIT with six first-place votes and 36 points.
UDC returns five of its top-six singles and doubles players from last year, including reigning ECC Rookie of the Year, Diego Pinto. The Firebirds finished 8-9 overall and 4-2 in league play in 2015, and they qualified for the ECC Championship Tournament semifinal round before falling to eventual runner-up, Queens College.
UDC also earned a berth in last year's NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament where they were eliminated by eventual region champion, NYIT.
The Firebirds were 1-2 in matches this past fall season, dropping matches to Division I Georgetown (9-0) and Chowan (6-3) but defeating NCAA Division II East Region foe USciences, 6-3.
UDC opens its spring championship season on February 19th vs. Division I George Mason.
