Firebirds Fall to NYIT in NCAA Tournament First Round
BROOKVILLE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis 2014-15 season came to an abrupt end on Saturday, May 2nd in the First Round of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament as the No. 7 seeded Firebirds suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of No. 2 seed and tournament host NYIT.
The No. 13 ranked team in the country, NYIT (14-7) swept doubles play with wins in succession at No. 1, 2 and 3. East Coast Conference Player of the Year Julio Pulido teamed with Tomas Lieb for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over UDC's First Team All-ECC selection Simon Andersson and freshman Alexis Baguelin. NYIT went on to win the 2nd and 3rd flights by identical scores of 8-3.
Pulido then earned the first singles win of the day defeating Andersson, 6-1, 6-2, and David Jiang bested freshman Ander Murillo, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 to complete the match win. All other singles matches were halted.
UDC finishes with a record of 8-9 overall while NYIT advances to the 2nd round to take on No. 3 seed Merrimack on Sunday, May 3rd.
