Firebirds Fall to Queens in ECC Men’s Tennis Semifinals

FLUSHING, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team was defeated, 5-2 by Queens College in the East Coast Conference Semifinals Friday afternoon at Queens College Tennis Center.

Ranked No. 5 in the East Region, the Firebirds (8-8) will now await notice of an NCAA Tournament berth and their seeding. Queens (13-3), ranked No. 4 in the East Region, improved to 2-0 vs. UDC this season and knocked out the Firebirds in the ECC semifinals for the second consecutive season. The No. 2 seeded Knights advance to their 2nd straight finals appearance to take on top-seeded NYIT.

UDC won two of the three doubles matches as freshmen Ander Murillo and ECC Rookie of the Year Diego Pinto edged Lucas Martinez and Christopher Barron, 8-6 at No. 3 and First Team All-ECC selection Simon Andersson teamed with freshman Alexis Baguelin for an 8-6 win over Sharvill Nawghre and Gabriel Mendez. The Firebirds led 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Knights, however, would storm through singles play with four consecutive wins at No. 3, 6, 1 and 2, to claim the victory and halt match play with two singles matches still unfinished.
