Firebirds Men’s Tennis Succumbs to No. 13 NYIT, 8-1
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team was defeated by No. 13 nationally-ranked New York Institute of Technology, 8-1 in East Coast Conference play on a windy Saturday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.
Freshman Diego Pinto (Electrical Engineering – Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Franco Bolivia) earned the lone Firebird win of the day at No. 4 singles with an impressive, 7-6(2), 6-0 victory over the No. 13 ranked individual player in the East Region, David Jiang.
The Bears, ranked No. 13 in Division II and No. 2 in the East Region, swept doubles play and won five of the six singles matches to secure the 8-1 victory.
NYIT improved to 8-6 (3-0 ECC) with today's win while UDC's four-match win-streak came to a halt and the Firebirds fell to 7-5 (3-1 ECC).
Before the match, UDC honored its captain and team leader, senior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) with a Senior Day celebration. Andersson has 41 singles wins and 40 doubles wins, and he helped the team reach two NCAA Tournaments over his outstanding four-year career as a Firebird.
