UDC Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Season with 6-1 Loss at Division I George Mason

MONTCLAIR, VA – Two University of the District of Columbia doubles teams won to secure one match point, but all six Firebirds singles players were defeated as UDC fell to Division I George Mason, 6-1 to open spring 2015 play on Friday afternoon at Montclair Country Club's indoor tennis courts.

The No. 2 UDC doubles pair of freshmen Rok Bozic (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Srednja Ekonomska Sola Roska) and Marco Feligioni (Architecture – Citta di Castello, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Citta di Piero) earned an impressive, 7-6 (5) win over the Patriots' Tanner Baine and Daniel Gutierrez. Before that result was in, the Firebirds 3rd doubles team of freshmen Ander Murillo (Business Management – Mondragon, Spain/Arizmendi Ikastola) and Diego Pinto (Electrical Engineering – Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Franco Bolivia) cruised past GMU's Aaron Capitel and Nick Barker, 6-1.

Having won two of the three doubles matches, UDC secured the one doubles point awarded in the Division I scoring format, and thus, led 1-0 heading into singles play.

There, the Patriots would roll to six straight singles victories and claim the 6-1 match win. UDC's senior No. 1 singles player Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) won the second set of his match vs. Jimmy Lange, 6-2, but Lange bounced back to claim a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

In the No. 3 singles slot, Baguelin battled for a 7-5 first set win, but Joe Hill came back to win back-to-back sets by the same score, 6-4.

The final singles match to come to a close was the No. 6, where Feligioni extended play with a 6-3 win in the 2nd set after dropping the first, 6-3. Gutierrez outlasted Feligioni in a battle of freshmen, to ultimately win the match 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

The Firebirds fell to 2-2 with today's loss, and they will take on another Division I foe on Wednesday, March 4th when they host cross town rival Howard at 2 p.m. (weather-permitting).
