UDC Men’s Tennis Drops Season Finale at Chestnut Hill, 7-2

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team was defeated by Chestnut Hill College, 7-2 on Thursday afternoon at CHC Tennis Courts in non-conference action between two regionally ranked teams.

The Firebirds (8-6), ranked No. 6 in the East Region, had a terrific day from senior Miguel Uzcategui  (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon), who showed why he was recently named an East Coast Conference First Team selection for the second consecutive year. Uzcategui teamed up with junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) for the first time this season, and the two battled Steven Say and Yoann Pham for an impressive, 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Uzcategui also went on to win a grueling singles match vs. Mariano Porter at the top singles spot, 6-4, 7-5.

Andersson looked to be on his way to a singles victory as well, but Say came back in the second set and ultimately won the match in a super tie-breaker, 6-1, 6-7 (1-6), 10-4. Freshman Simon Jackermeier (Business Management – Munich Germany/Theresien-Gymnasium Munich) also played in a highly-contested singles match before bowing out, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.

Without their No. 2 singles player Ike Kiro, the Firebirds had to forfeit matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.  Chestnut Hill won matches at No. 2 doubles and No. 2 through No. 5 singles.

UDC is a No. 2 seed in the ECC Championship Tournament which begins with the semifinals tomorrow. The Firebirds will take on No. 3 seed and tournament host, Queens College at 2 p.m.
