Firebirds Four Match Win Streak Halted in Loss at Roberts Wesleyan
ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Miguel Uzcategui won his top singles match and teamed with classmate Ike Kiro for a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Firebirds' four match win streak came to a halt as University of the District of Columbia was defeated by East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan, 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.
UDC fell to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in ECC play while Roberts Wesleyan improved to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Redhawks avenged a 6-3 loss to the Firebirds on March 29th last season and evened the all-time series 1-1.
Roberts claimed victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, before Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Kiro teamed up for an exciting, 9-7 win over Charles Farres and Sam Thorold at No. 1. The Redhawks led, 2-1 after doubles play.
In singles play, Ema Rauchle downed Drew Stewart, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot to make it 3-1, Roberts, but Uzcategui earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Beka Buchukuri to bring UDC within a point, 3-2. Uzcategui has won his last five straight singles matches and is now 7-5 overall this season. The Redhawks went on to win the next four consecutive singles matches though, en-route to a 7-2 victory.
The Firebirds will fly north to Long Island next week to visit ECC foes Dowling (April 11th) and NYIT (April 12th).
