UDC Men’s Tennis Earns Shutout Victory in Shortened Match at Le Moyne

LIVERPOOL, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team earned a shutout, 5-0 victory in a shortened match vs. host Le Moyne College Friday afternoon at Liverpool Gold's Gym.

Both coaches agreed to end the match once UDC had clinched the victory having won all three doubles matches and two of the six singles matches.

The Firebirds have now won four straight matches and improved to 6-3 overall. Le Moyne, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, fell to 4-8 overall.

Seniors Ike Kiro (Business Management – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/NJIT) and Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) took care of business first in doubles with a dominant, 8-0 win at the first flight. The No. 2 pairing of junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanksa Gymnasiet) and freshman Simon Jackermeier (Business Management – Munich, Germany/Theresien-Gymnasium Munich) and No. 3 pairing of senior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Drew Stewart (Information Technology – Fort Washington, MD/National Christian Academy) both followed with decisive victories in succession.

Uzcategui, a First Team All-East Coast Conference selection last year, was close to victory at No. 1 singles when James Gayvert retired with the match score 6-2, 2-6, 5-1, bringing UDC one singles win away from victory.

Jackermeier would finish off the job for the Firebirds with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Shane Evans at the No. 3 spot. This marks his second straight match-clinching victoy.

All the other singles matches were left unfinished.

UDC will stay in the northwest corner of New York as the Firebirds visit ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan tomorrow, Saturday, April 5th at 12 p.m. in Rochester.
