Firebirds Soar Past STAC in ECC Men’s Tennis Match

ARLINGTON, VA – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team swept East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Arlington YMCA Tennis & Squash Center.

The Firebirds (5-3, 2-0 ECC) won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches en-route to their third straight victory. STAC lost its third straight match and fell to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The UDC No. 2 doubles team of junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) and freshman Simon Jackermeier (Business Management – Munich, Germany/Theresien-Gymnasium Munich) earned the first match point of the day with a dominant, 8-1 victory over Will Tronsor and Mike Tasaro. Senior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Drew Stewart (Information Technology – Fort Washington, MD/National Christian Academy) followed with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles, and the Firebirds' No. 1 pair of seniors Miguel Uzcaetegui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Ike Kiro (Business Management – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/NJIT) completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory.

In singles play, Quiroga defeated Tom Schumann in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot to put UDC one singles match away from victory. Jackermeier, who had been absent the past two matches, earned the match-clinching victory, 6-2, 6-3 over Tronsor at the No. 3 spot. The Firebirds would go on to win the final four singles matches as well.

Next up, the Firebirds travel north to Syracuse, NY to take on the Northeast-10 Conference's Le Moyne on Friday, April 4th.
