Firebirds Soar Past Howard, 4-1

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches and three of four completed singles matches to earn a 4-1 victory Thursday afternoon vs. cross town Division I rival Howard.

Seniors Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Ike Kiro (Business Management – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/NJIT) teamed up for a dominant, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, and junior Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) and freshman Simon Jackermeier (Business Management – Munich, Germany/Theresien-Gymnasium Munich) secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Ismael Kaouache put Howard on the board as he bested Kiro, 6-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, but Uzcategui put the Firebirds back on top with an exciting, 5-6, 6-0, 10-4 comeback win at No. 1singles. Jackermeier and Andersson earned successive wins at No. 3 and 4, respectively, to seal the victory as the No. 5 and 6 singles matches were left unfinished.

The Firebirds improve to 2-1 on the season with the win while Howard falls to 0-9. UDC will host non-region Division II foe Ohio Dominican from Columbus, OH on Sunday, March 9th at 12 p.m. The Panthers, who compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are 3-3 overall this season.
