Miguel Uzcategui Earns 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Third Team Honor

TOWSON, MD – Junior Miguel Uzcategui of the University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team has earned Third Team Capital One Academic All-America honors as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the Men's and Women's At-Large Teams on Friday, June 7th.

Uzcategui is the first male Firebird student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American and just the second in the school's history after Alice Butler - a forward on the women's basketball team who earned First Team Academic All-American honors in 1981.

A First Team All-ECC selection, Uzcategui earned an overall singles record of 10-4 and a very impressive 17-3 mark in doubles play. Playing primarily at the No. 3 singles spot, he was a perfect 4-0 against the ECC. Also, he teamed with Carlos Quiroga to win the ITA Regional Doubles "B" draw championship in the fall, and later with Ike Kiro to go 10-3 at No. 2 doubles in the spring.

From Valencia, Venezuela, Uzcategui boasts a 3.95 cumulative GPA as an Electrical Engineering major. He earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in both the spring and fall of 2012, and he was recently selected for a prestigious internship with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute where he will work on a chemical sensors engineering project.

To qualify for Academic All-America, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher, have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution, have earned First Team Academic All-District honors, and be nominated by the school's sports information director.

The Capital One Division II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 Division II Academic All-America teams program. The Capital One Academic All-America Division II Men's At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.
