ECC Announces 2012-2013 Scholar-Athletes; Junior and Uzcategui Honored

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY ‐ The East Coast Conference announced the 2012‐2013 Male and Female Scholar‐Athletes of the Year, as well as the Scholar‐Athletes of the Year for all of its sponsored sports at the ECC Awards Dinner on May 22. Matthew Hussey (Marion, N.Y.) of the Roberts Wesleyan men's cross country and track and field teams was named the Male Scholar‐Athlete of the Year and Kimberly Mills (Basom, N.Y.) of the Roberts Wesleyan women's cross country and track and field teams took home the Female Scholar‐Athlete of the Year.
Hussey, a Math Education graduate student, helped his team to a second place finish in this year's ECC Cross Country Championship and was named to the ECC All‐Conference Second‐Team, finishing the race in 14th place with a time of 27:26.00. He boasts a 4.0 GPA in graduate school after completing his BA in Mathematics with a 3.93 GPA.
Mills maintains a 3.94 GPA as an Accounting and Management Information Systems major. In the fall of 2012, she helped the Redhawks to a first place finish at the ECC Cross Country Championship meet and was named First Team All‐Conference after coming in third place in a time of 18:55.60. She also was a standout for the Roberts Wesleyan Track and Field teams. Mills earned First Team All‐Conference honors in the 3,000 meter run at the ECC Indoor Track and Field Championship and the 5,000 meter run at the ECC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Both Hussey and Mills were also named the Cross Country Scholar‐Athlete of the Year for their respective genders.
2012‐2013 ECC Scholar Athletes of the Year
Baseball – Christopher Mignoli (Floral Park, N.Y.), Mercy: Mignoli, who appeared in nine games on the mound for the Mavericks and compiled a 3.97 ERA, posted a 3.78 GPA as a Sport Management major.
Men's Basketball – Nick Lopez (Jackson, N.J.), St. Thomas Aquinas: Lopez, a Economics major with a 3.71 GPA, wins the award for the second straight year after saw action in all 28 games with 26 starts for the Spartans. He chipped in with 6.9 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, and 42 assists on the season.
Co‐Women's Basketball – Janelle Junior (Riverside, Calif.), District of Columbia: Junior, a senior guard and captain, finished second on the Firebirds with a 10.5 points per game average and also ranked in the top 10 in the ECC with a 35.7 three point shooting percentage. She also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.72 GPA as an Administration of Justice major.
Co‐Women's Basketball – Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.), LIU Post: Holding a 3.68 GPA as a History Education major, Marciniak was an integral part of LIU Post making their third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. An All‐Conference First Team member, Marciniak averaged 13.6 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Men's Indoor Track and Field – Michael Kraus (Pascack Valley, N.J.), St. Thomas Aquinas: Kraus was named First‐Team All‐Conference in the 1,000 meter and the Distance Medley Relay and Second Team All‐Conference in the 4 x 800 meter relay. In addition to his accomplishments on the track, he recorded a 3.86 GPA with a major in Criminal Justice.
Women's Indoor Track and Field – Stephanie Meyer (Seaford, N.Y.), Molloy: A Speech‐Language Pathology/Audiology major earned a 3.88 GPA while competing for the Lions Indoor Track & Field Team. In addition to her achievements in the classroom, she was named to the All‐Conference First Team in 60‐meter hurdles and the All Conference Second Team in the long jump and triple jump. She also earned USTFCCCA All‐Region recognition in the pentathlon.
Co‐Men's Lacrosse – Tim Bradley (Wantagh, N.Y.), LIU Post: Bradley, a senior Business major recorded a 3.48 GPA and helped the Pioneers to the ECC Regular Season Championship. He played in 13 of the Pioneers' 14 games, posting a 6.73 overall goals against average, leading the ECC and ranking third in Division II. He also recorded a .571 save percentage on the season, placing him first in the ECC and 13th in the nation.
Co‐Men's Lacrosse – Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.), Chestnut Hill: Maurer posted a 3.5 GPA with a major in History. On the field, he played in all 13 of the Griffins' games, recording 151 saves and earning him a No. 9 ranking in Division II as well as All‐ECC honors. His save percentage of .574 placed him fourth in the ECC and 19th in the nation and he helped lead his team to a tie for third in the final ECC Men's Lacrosse standings.
Women's Lacrosse – Melissa Rohr (Bethpage, N.Y.), LIU Post: Rohr, a junior Secondary Education major, played in all 18 of the Pioneers' games this year, helping her team to a first place ECC finish and to a second consecutive National Championship. Also an ECC All‐Conference First Team member, Rohr has accumulated a 3.8 GPA.
Men's Outdoor Track and Field – Vincent Fratto (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Queens: Fratto earned First Team All‐Conference in the Shot Put and Discus and Second Team All‐Conference in the Hammer at the ECC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. With these top‐finishes, he helped his team to their first ever ECC Outdoor Track & Field Co‐Championship. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, this junior History and Elementary and Early Childhood Education major posted a 3.628 GPA.
Co‐Women's Outdoor Track and Field –Allison Borriello (Valley Central, N.Y.), St. Thomas Aquinas: Borriello, a junior Math Education major boasts a 3.63 GPA, is a recipient of the Spartan Presidential Scholar‐Athlete Award, and has been named to the ADA Honor Roll, ECC Commissioner's Honor Roll, and the Dean's List. On the track, she was named First Team All‐Conference in the 800 meter run and also participated in the 4 x 400 relay.
Co‐ Women's Outdoor Track and Field – Lauren Calorel (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), Georgian Court: Calorel helped the Lions to a first place finish at the ECC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with All‐Conference finishes in the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump. An Exercise Science major, Calorel will graduate with a 3.65 GPA.
Men's Soccer – Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark), LIU Post: Jorgensen, a two‐time ECC Goalkeeper of the Year, led the ECC in almost every statistical category including goals against (17), goals against average (0.99), and save percentage (.795). In the classroom,the Political Science and Economics Major has maintained a 3.96 GPA.
Women's Soccer – Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden) Bridgeport: Hansson, a Health Science major with a 3.87 GPA, was named an Academic All‐American after a great season between the pipes for the Purple Knights. In 19 games, she posted an 11‐6‐2 record with seven clean sheets.
Softball – Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Molloy: Sinagra, an All‐Conference Second Team selection, helped lead Molloy to their third straight ECC Championship and a spot in the NCAA Division II World Series, hitting .372 with 13 doubles, nine triples, and four homeruns. Sinagra, a Speech‐Language Pathology/Audiology major with a 3.89 GPA, was also named an Academic All‐American.
Co‐Men's Tennis – Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium), NYIT: Marcon was an integral part of the ECC Champion posting a 20‐8 mark in doubles play. A senior Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace concentration, has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Co‐Men's Tennis – Miguel Uzcategui (Valencia, Venezuela), District of Columbia: An All‐Conference First Team selection with an overall record of 10‐4 and a doubles record of 17‐3, Uzcategui helped lead the Firebirds to an ECC Regular Season Championship. An Electrical Engineering major, Uzcategui has posted a 3.953 GPA through his junior year.
Women's Tennis – Anna Rodionova (Orenburg, Russia), Queens: Rodionova, a junior All‐Conference selection, posted marks of 11‐3 in singles and 8‐1 in doubles for the Knights this season. She also helped the Knights to their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Round of 16 while also excelling in her academics with a 3.781 GPA.
Volleyball – Bethany Shepard (Lakewood, Colo.), Dowling: Shepard led the ECC with 554 kills and 4.47 kills per set to help her earn the ECC Player of the Year honor and a spot on the AVCA All‐America squad. A Elementary Education major, the senior posted a 3.679 GPA.
