District of Columbia Falls Short of ECC Crown to NYIT, 5-0

FLUSHING, NY – The top-seeded University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team played No. 3 seed NYIT in the East Coast Conference Finals where they fell to the Bears by a score of 5-0, being swept in doubles play and losing the first two singles matches of the day.  For a third straight year, the Firebirds came up short, losing in the conference championship.

The Firebirds, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA East Region, finished the season with a record of 10-4 and await their possible berth in the NCAA East Regional Tournament.

The Bears claimed the first doubles point of the day with Jaime Salvador and Eduardo Maurtua grabbing the win over junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn), 8-0.  In the No. 2 doubles match, junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) fell to Nicolas Jubera and Pedro Peixoto, 8-6.  The Bears completed the doubles sweep with Tomas Lieb and Julian Marcon of NYIT defeating senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet), 8-6.

NYIT went on to claim the first two singles matches to secure the overall match victory and ECC Championship.  Bratke was defeated by Peixoto in the first singles match 6-3, 6-0.  The last match of the day was claimed by Jubera over Quiroga 6-3, 6-2.  With the Bears winning the first two singles matches, the last four matches were halted.
