District of Columbia Falls to No. 10 Concordia on Senior Day, 8-1

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team played host to Concordia College, ranked No. 10 in the nation, where the Firebirds fell 8-1.  With the loss, the Firebirds dropped to 10-3 on the season and 5-0 in East Coast Conference play.  This was their first loss of the season to a Division II team. 

Also on the day, the Firebirds honored senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) on Senior Day.  Grabovac amassed a 23-11 singles play record and 19-10 doubles record in two seasons at UDC.

The Firebirds claimed the first doubles match of the day with junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) soaring past Juuso Olfans and Benas Majauskas, 8-1.  The next match saw junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) lose to David Tisserand and Andreas Lindell of Concordia, 8-1.  The Clippers took the No. 1 doubles match as Grabovac and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) lost to Andrey Boldarev and Daniele Piludu, 8-4.

In singles play, Kiro was defeated in the No. 2 match by Piludu 6-1, 6-2.   Next, Uzcategui dropped a close match to Tisserand 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.  Majauskas then secured the overall match victory for the Clippers by defeating Andersson 6-2, 6-0. 

In his last regular season singles match for the Firebirds, Grabovac came up short against Boldarev, losing a close one 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.  In the No. 5 singles match, Quiroga was defeated by Ojanen 8-2.  The last match of the day saw Bratke lose to Ricardo Frey of Concordia, 8-2.

District of Columbia will be back in action Friday, April 19 in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference tournament.
