District of Columbia Defeats Dowling, 9-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team played host to Dowling College, where they easily defeated the Golden Lions, 9-0.  With the win, the Firebirds improved to 10-2 on the season and 5-0 in East Coast Conference play, allowing them to go undefeated in ECC regular season play and extend their current win streak to five matches.

In the first match of doubles play, junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) won by forfeit due to an insufficient Dowling lineup.  The doubles team of junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) soared past Brain Miller and Marc Lewis, 8-0.  Senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) closed out doubles play in the No. 1 match by defeating Sardorjan Mamadjanov and Francisco Del Castillo by a score of 8-2.

Dowling College had to forfeit the first two singles matches again due to insufficient lineups.  These two forfeits gave the Firebirds the five wins needed to claim the overall match victory.

Bratke played in the No. 4 singles match where he easily defeated Lewis 6-0, 6-0 for his first singles match of the season.  Quirogo followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Miller.  In the No. 2 singles match, Kiro posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Del Castillo.  In his last regular season ECC match for the Firebirds, Grabovac claimed the No. 1 singles match by recording a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mamadjanov of Dowling.

District of Columbia will be back in action at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 as they host East Region No. 1 Concordia (NY) on Senior Day.
