Firebirds Soar Past Division I Howard, 8-1

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team played host to Howard University, where they easily defeated the Division I member, 8-1.  With the win, the Firebirds improved to 9-2 on the season and 4-0 in East Coast Conference play and were able to extend their win streak to four matches.

The Firebirds began the day by claiming all three doubles matches.  Senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) claimed the first win of the day by defeating Spencer Mitchell and Myron Davis, 8-3.  In the No. 2 doubles match, junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) eased past Bogan Dzakovic and Brandon Burns, 8-2.  The last doubles match consisted of junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) defeating Serbia Kendall and Nico Sorrell of Howard, 8-4.

The Firebirds continued their winning ways with Qzcategui defeating Dzakovic 6-1, 6-0.  In the No. 5 singles match, Quiroga beat Sorrell 6-0, 6-0 to secure the overall match victory for the Firebirds.

In the No. 4 singles match, Andersson picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kendall.  Kiro followed suit by defeating Davis 6-2, 6-3.  In what was arguably the closest match of the day, Grabovac battled Mitchell to three sets and ultimately won 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 to claim the Firebirds' eighth and final victory of the day.  The Bison finally claimed a win in the final match with Burns defeating Bratke, 8-6.

District of Columbia will be back in action at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 14 as they host Concordia (NY).
